Pages: 348 pages
Rating: 4 stars

Straight out of the psych ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The guy she’s loved from a distance for years moves away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing.The connection defies logic. Even better, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Too bad Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. He is also a soul reaper. A Grimnir.

The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life

My Review:
You should all start off by knowing while this is kind of a novella, it is both full length and continues from where we left off in Immortals (which you can read HERE). If you are following the series, don't let the .5 next to the book number deter you. You want to read this, and you will need to read this to understand what is going to be happening in book 3 Seeress set to come out sometime this April.

Now onto the actual review. This story was completely in Cora's POV, and, unfortunately, extremely predictable. I think that was it's biggest draw back. It followed mud of the same pattern found in Runes and I found self getting a little bored. And poor Eirik... for a deity (god?) he sure does get the shortest straw over and over... doesn't he? My only other complaint is that the relationship between Echo and Cora seemed a bit unrealistic. Echo is kind of an ass... all the time, but Cora doesn't see much fault in him. Not even Raine saw much fault in him. The only time Cora was ever mad at him is when Echo plays the moral high ground and doesn't give her the attention she wants. I would have liked to see an instance where Cora had a series moral conflict about her relationship with him like we saw in Runes.

Of course, the story wasn't all bad. It was far from bad because it did have a lot going for it. For example, we do get to find out a lot of whats going on in Cora's mind set and how she feels about things that are going on in the other world around them. We get to learn a bit about what happened while she was in PMI (like why she was there) and the after effect Maliina had on her. As an added bonus, we get to see Raine and Torin's relationship dynamic from another point of view, which I found very intriguing. The story does branch a little into the New Adult spectrum, because there is a little bit of mature content in there, but it is brief and is vague on major details, so it kind of hits a blurred line of where YA stops and NA begins. Saying that, seeing that type of dynamic and writing style in this series only benefitted the story and is probably the main reason the book received a 4 star rating rather than a 3.5 star one.

Overall, Grimnirs is an obvious must-read for the Runes series lovers out there. It was well written, but the plot did suffer in its predictability. It was great to see the character development in this book that we might not have seen if it had remained in Raine's POV. From what I hear, Ednah Walters is going to continue with this new trend and post novellas (which will actually be full length books) in different POVs of the other secondary characters in the book following the release of a book in Raine's. I am both excited and wary of this. Excited to learn everybody's story, wary because I have a feeling that the same love story pattern might be put on repeat. Only time will tell!

Peter Brett

I love Peter Brett. If you don't know who he is, he is the author of The Warded Man, a book I HIGHLY recommend. If you follow me on Twitter, then you have already seen this, but for those who haven't, here is how the story goes:

I was on Goodreads looking at recent books I have read and seeing what other readers have rated them and reviewed. When I get the the Goodreads page for The Warded Man (which you can read for yourself HERE) I scrolled down to see this:

Now, if this doesn't show you how amazing this man is, then obviously something is wrong with you. He worked so amazingly hard on this series and he, along with his followers, are so proud of what he has accomplished. The Warded Man is easily one of my Favourite books of all time and has been the second I immersed myself into the book. I did review the book, which you can read HERE, but if my word isn't enough for you, the book is just as entertaining as the author that wrote it... and as seen above, he is pretty damned entertaining!!

I love Torin St. James...
I crave his touch...
I need his strength...

Raine Cooper is certain of two things: her love for Torin St. James and her destiny to be a powerful seeress. But when she starts having premonitions, they are unclear and disturbing. Worse, they involve Torin. Not sure what to do, she keeps quiet.
But when the visions are about her and another man, Raine realizes she needs to talk to someone. Just her luck two new students arrive at her school and they seem to have answers. When with them, her powers are enhanced and her visions become clear. There is only one problem: Torin does not want Raine to have anything to do with the two girls but he won't explain why.
Can their love survive the secrets they are keeping from each other?

Love y'all!

My Review:
There is something you should all know. This is possible the best book I have ever read. If you have seen my Reviews, and you know how picky and critical I am, you know how much this statement means to me. Peter Brett just went on the fast track to my top 5 favourite authors of all time– very high on that list at that. One of my oldest friends gave me this book and insisted I read it, even though it seemed a little dark for me, I followed his advice and read it. I didn't look back once and I love my friend dearly for introducing me to this fantastic book.

Now about the book its self. The novel is split into 3 different story lines about 3 completely different people in 3 completely different parts of the world until they finally meet up at the end. Time wise, the book spans over 15 or so years. Not my usual repertoire  At first, I was frustrated with the switching of story lines. Right when one would get good, it would switch to something else. It was absolutely maddening, especially in the beginning, but you soon get into the flow of the other story lines and they are just as addicting as the first. Each story starts off with the main character as a child and you slowly watch them grow up. Peter Brett did this fantastically, never too slow, never too fast, and never spewing useless fluff at his readers to fill in the chapters and more pages. Every single word had a purpose, and every detail was important.

The character development was phenomenal, the best I think I have ever seen. You see beliefs challenged, and watch as each character, and even some supporting characters, change as time goes forward. You see how other characters effect the main ones and how the main characters effect the others. You understand the reasoning behind the main characters actions, you accept their beliefs in accordance to their personality and upbringing, and you approve (for the most part) of the choices they make in the situation they are in. Everything is incredibly realistic in this aspect and I have never seen an author perfect such a thing to this magnitude.

I don't really know what else I can say other than the fact I don't really have any complaints about this book. It was absolutely fantastic!!! The friend who lent me the first in the series, knowing how speedily I read (I started this first book last night at 8pm and finished at 6:30pm today while having gone to school in the middle... I sacrificed a lot of sleep on this one), lent me the second in the series that I am going to start the second this post is published. For the record it is called The Desert Spear. I'll keep you all informed in the sequel and if it measures up to the first.

And here is a little teaser to keep you sustained for now ;)

JILLIAN
It had always been clear to me that we had different songs playing in our heads.  My music was usually more of a death metal battle march that involved a lot of blood being spilt.  Dom’s…oh Dom’s music was something that a romantic Irish poet would listen to, whatever the fuck that might be.  He was a warrior, but I’d always known he had a poet’s soul.  There could be no denying that it was one of the things I loved most about him.  Still, it had always made everything hard.  It was so hard to be the other half of someone’s perfect love story when you were as imperfect as me.  I’d always known I’d fuck it all up.  It had only been a matter of time.
DOM
It had always been as clear as day to me that it was fate that brought us together.  Our love was written in the stars as clearly as ink on paper, but I knew she couldn’t read it.  She was no star gazer.  And certainly no dream chaser.  Her feet were planted too firmly on the ground.
